My mom has a major green thumb. Me? Not so much. There’ve been times in my life when I stayed on top of watering the plants. And I enjoy a nice garden, and having green plants in the house. But when it comes down to it, I’m generally horrible at working toward those things.

I think my mom has been entertained at how excited I’ve been about the things that keep growing in my yard. This fall and winter, it was kale, and cilantro, and mustard greens, and broccoli verde. A few weeks ago, my mom came over and planted a variety of seeds and we already have wee plants – squash (with gorgeous yellow flowers), beans, corn, pea sprouts, peppers, eggplant, more cilantro, and a bunch of stuff that we’ve yet to clearly identify. Almost every day, I’m, “Mom, did you see how much they grew? It’s like overnight. I wish I had a night vision camera that I could just put out there.” Experienced gardener that she is, she smiles and tells me, “That’s what happens.” Maybe for others, but not for me. My yard might be uneven, with a weird assortment of grass, but it’s rocking in the worm department, and plants love it, apparently. Even our compost heap is gorgeous, with huge leaves growing out of it. I suspect that they’re pumpkin.
