New necklace

Posted by Shokufeh on 28 Oct 2004 | Tagged as: Uncategorized

Last weekend, I made this necklace.

I wanted it asymmetrical, but I’d anticipated that the larger flower would hang in the center. It turned out the reverse. I now see it’s because the weight in the shell flowers isn’t that different, despite the size difference, and the way I knotted the leather cord is a major factor. I think I’ll try again.

Mmmm

I just had the perfect afternoon snack – a banana.
Which was perfect in texture (firm, yet creamy),
flavor (sweet, with a tart undertaste),
and size (filling, but not so much that I grew sick of it).
No implements were needed. It didn’t soil my hands.
Perfect.
Thank you, God.

Home Equity

Saturday, I came across the second half of Growing Pains II: Home Equity. As anyone who knew me in my early and mid teens knows, I was once a rabid fan. The inside jokes were mildly amusing – the next generation saying Mike’s leather jacket would have been cooler had it been worn by Leonardo DiCaprio, Maggie saying she was always able to take time out for a laugh on Tuesday nights…. But even I can say they should have left well enough alone. Sometimes, the memories are better than trying to recapture what once was. And did they think I wouldn’t notice that the house was completely different?! But was supposed to be the same house! That was no 15 Robin Hood Lane! (Rabid fan, go back into your cave!)

Prunus

I’ve noticed that some companies have taken to calling their prunes “dried plums.” Sure, it’s what they are, and I know there tends to be a negative association with prunes (which I don’t understand, because I LOVE them, and no, they don’t make me run to the bathroom), but why the sudden change?

And, then, last week, in Costco, I noticed in the produce section some “fresh prunes.” Yes, they were plums.

Anyone else think this is weird?

plum n.
1. Any of several shrubs or small trees of the genus Prunus, bearing smooth-skinned, fleshy, edible fruit with a single hard-shelled stone that encloses the seed.
2. The fruit of any of these trees.

A Public Health success?

Posted by Shokufeh on 15 Oct 2004 | Tagged as: Uncategorized

While it’s disconcerting that a lot of those who need it will not be getting the flu vaccine this year, the accompanying attention to the issue makes me feel like public health has been getting its mesage across. People have taken to heart that they’re supposed to get the flu vaccine each fall. Now they can’t get it and they’re worried, and there’s price-gouging, and strict laws are being put in place, and shareholders are suing…. But all of these unfortunate things are closely tied to people having listened when public health said, “Get your flu shot.”

My recent interest in communications issues shines through.

An even more dramatic sunset

Seeing a crescent sunset is pretty cool!
I’m just bumming that I left my camera at home.

Yeah, yeah, I know I’m not supposed to look. But you think I made a pinhole box, when I don’t even have my camera?

Thanks, Julia. for bringing this article to my attention:

Royal flush covers loo blushes

Doesn’t have the added benefits of a loud fan, but seems like a good idea.

Update:
I guess the people who’ve known me for a long time know what I like. Later in the day, without seeing the above, my Dad also sent me a toilet-related article. This one’s for the guys:

Since I asked for intercession, the number of emails in my Inbox rose dramatically. I think it was just a test, of more than one thing. But, today, I rose to the challenge, and knocked more than 150 emails out of my Inbox.

Hot man, pink slippahs

At lunch today, I saw Jason Mo*moa, or someone who bears a striking resemblance to him. He was wearing pink sequined/glittery flip-flops.
