time-lapse photography (sort of) and a random, but pressing, question

as requested friends, here are some visual aids:

some pictures of me growing up -- notice the decidedly straight hair:

dance recital

2nd grade school picture

riding my bike

Nas and Shad up close

some pictures of me in college and after-- notice the decidedly curly hair:

Goot and Nas.jpg

Nas in the phone booth

the 4 of us - NEBY fest.jpg

me and Andrew (zen).jpg

and here i am now, as of about 5 minutes ago -- without any chemical or thermal attempts to straighten my hair.

lo and behold:

straight hair

bizarre, no?

and on a completely unrelated note, who decided it's a good idea to have outdoor subway stops? it was 9 freaking degrees today, and with the wind chill, it was -10. i lost all feeling in my toes waiting for a couple of trains on the way home today, and when i finally got to my stop and tried to walk home, my toes were so cold and numb that it hurt to walk. every step was torture. i started to really empathize with reinhold messner, the world-famous mountain-climber extraordinaire (i read a long story about him in national geographic recently).

honestly people, outdoor subway stops? couldn't we have come up something a little better when designing the best public transit system in america?

those are some cute kid pics, nas. :) i think it's funny how shadi's smile from many years ago looks exactly like it does today.

anyways, the hair thing is quite bizarre. there is an article on pubmed that says hair curliness is determined from the bulb, while other, less reputable sites state that it is also dependent on the number if disulfide bonds between the keratin proteins that make up your hair.

First, it must be said: you are absolutely gorgeous. I hope Greg won't mind me saying that, but seeing the progression from cutest child ever through full womanhood is intense. Don't know what's up with your hair, but whatever it is, it's working.

Second, Reinhold Messner is one of my heroes. Anyone willing to suffer slight brain damage to become the most badass climber in the world is legendary by me.

Third, yeah. Outdoor stops? Come on guys. You can do better. It's not the engineers...it's the guys with the pursestrings.

you know, ed, shadi hates that picture because she says it was her awkward phase and she looks terrible. i think she's rather cute. and yes, her smile is the same. and you can't go wrong with that hawaiian shirt. ;-)

also, i've heard the disulfide bonds thing. i think miss lively taught us that in sophomore chemistry, actually. she said that's why blow-drying your hair straight works -- because heat breaks the polar bonds. but then when you wash your hair, the water restores the polarity, so your hair curls again. so i guess i've lost my disulfide bonds...

and georgie, thanks. i think you're slightly biased, but that's ok. and i think that picture of me from last night was kind of frightening, but whatev. :)

so, yeah, reinhold is a badass. very interesting guy. i was remembering that part in the article where it described the night that he and his brother were stuck on everest with no camping gear or equipment, huddling together in -40 degree weather, with no food or water. that man is seriously superhuman. and of course, my bout with -10 degree weather for about 20 minutes last night doesn't compare by any means, but still... :)

I will say that the picture of you from last night is startling, but only because your hair looks EVEN STRAIGHTER than when I saw you 3 weeks ago. What is going on?!?!

Agree with George: it's workin'. No really, look how shiny and pretty! You are a beautiful woman, my friend.

That picture of us all from NEBYfest is awesome. I had mono there and didn't even know it! But that's not why the picture is awesome, of course. ;)

That is bizarro, Nas! But it looks great curly, it looks great straight. You're cute either way.

Speaking of cute, that first picture of you? Ohh my goodness.

Nas--
You are so beautiful. This straight thing is freakin me out, though.
Love you!

i've always wanted curly hair, but unfortunately i don't think the water-restoring polarity does anything to asian hair. : ) anyway it is kind of bizarre, but pretty cool at the same time. enjoy it ! i think it looks lovely, nas. and i think the third picture is adorable. : )

This is completely bizzare, Nas. And completely awesome. To echo the others, you look great with straight hair! Miss you, friend!

yeah, so expect my bill in the mail for that one. i'm sure my already lawyer friends can find a way to sue for that.
