Um, wow.
Posted by: george at November 27, 2006 09:51 PMUm, yeah. I keep thinking there's something that I'm missing or not getting and that it can't really be as uncool as it looks. But, no, I think it really is that uncool.
Posted by: Aaron at November 28, 2006 10:43 AMwhoa....what is going on in this ad? i agree, very disturbing.
Posted by: mona at November 28, 2006 11:41 AMI don't even really know what to say. I almost want to ask to see another ad to see where they are going with this, but I'm not sure I'm prepared for what I might see.
Posted by: lacey at November 28, 2006 11:54 AMthat can't be right

Yeah even CNN money noted that this add has received criticism for being racist:

I heard that the ads were pulled in Europe because of the outcry, and maybe the same thing will happen here. This truly speaks to why Racism is America's most challenging issue and something that we collectively need to work on addressing everyday. Thanks Nas for pointing out this extremely offensive marketing campaign and sparking this conversation.
The only thing scarier than this ad is the fact that it was most likely
1. Concieved by an individual in a moment of "inspiration"
2. Pitched to the ad company-mates
3. Consulted on by a large committee
4. Given the greenlight by said committee
5. Art directed, designed, photographed and pasted up by a half dozen other individuals
I would love to have been a fly on the wall during each and every one of these steps. What the hell happened here?
Posted by: Andrew at November 29, 2006 10:30 PMHOLY MOLY.
When I looked at this the first time, I didn't even SEE the black dude!
Now I notice him, and wow.
Posted by: Steve at November 30, 2006 12:00 PMI think that what happened there, unfortunately, is that they just didn't think about it or care, and that's because the Netherlands hasn't yet had to struggle with these issues in the same way that America has. It looks like the most vocal critics have apparently been in the United States, where the image has been viewed over the Internet, rather than in the Netherlands, where the ad was actually up. As difficult as race relations have been and continue to be in the U.S., the benefit of having to struggle through this "most challenging issue" is that it has made many people sensitive to issues and taught us some of the ways to respond. Technology and trade are bringing different cultures and groups into close proximity around the world in the same way that they were brought into America in the past, and the American experiment demonstrates plenty of pitfalls for the global community to avoid--but also proof that a nationality and citizenship based on a more fundamental connection than appearance is not only possible, it's desirable.
Posted by: Aaron at November 30, 2006 12:48 PMI hate this ad more than I have hated anything in years.
Posted by: Patrick at December 1, 2006 12:49 PMyeah wow took me a second to realize the frightening woman was grabbing a black man by the face...just...who was thinking what when they made this ad?! there's no possible good explanation for this, no matter what the underlying creative 'concept' may have been, the image is awful.
ugh. why isn't there more of an outcry about this?
Posted by: maya at December 1, 2006 08:01 PMBased on other ads I've seen in this campaign, I think that's actually a black woman and not a black man. But it can be hard to tell from this image (not insulting your photo, Nas). And yeah, this looks like a shock campaign...sadly, it seems to come with a message of white supremacy (which in this case, means the white playstation is superior to the black one).
Posted by: lacey at December 2, 2006 10:36 PMOkay.. we all dislike racism and what this could signify, but I think her insane white mullet is almost as bad.
Posted by: Myk at December 8, 2006 12:08 PMwow, i didnt see the black guy till steve pointed it out. now that i do, the uproar makes more sense :)
Posted by: greg at December 9, 2006 03:05 AMYeah, that's just adding insult to injury.
