texas girl in the snow

House of Worship in the snow

my civic... waaay out of its element

real winter is so pretty!

aite, y'all, so i'm a texan, born and bred. ain't no shame in it. i'm proud to be from texas. but i'm not gonna lie... we ain't got no winter where i'm from.

so, this week marks yet another significant snowfall. i must say that i'm actually quite proud of myself. in the past few months, i've learned how to bundle up, scrape snow off my car, use a shovel and a snowblower, even how to drive slowly in lower gears. it's really not as bad as i was expecting--it's doable. and come april, when the weather finally "warms up" (relative term), i'll be able to say that i've survived a real winter.

here are a few epiphanies i've had about the cold. these should be especially handy for my fellow southerners who may be venturing up north sometime:

1. i finally understand what SUV's are actually good for--snow and ice. strange how there are way more SUV's in texas than there are here, even though there's little to no use for them in the texas weather (believe me, no one ever off-roads it--the most action those H2's ever see is the un-snowy highway).

2. when it comes to curly hair and the humidity-induced frizz, snow is just like rain! turns out it's still water and it'll still make your hair poof. who knew?!

3. water-proof snowboots that you can tuck your pants into are from God.

4. the water bottles you (read "i") keep in the back of your (read "my") trunk for emergencies will promptly freeze and noisily tumble around your (read "my") trunk like the blocks of ice that they are... every single time you (read "i") make a turn.

5. of course you (read "i") always can if you (read "i") want to, but you (read "i") don't have to go to the gym when it's below freezing. :)

Nas has even survived a full blown snowball fight. Much better than I did, I might add. And I am a veteran of the snow :)

Haha. Yeah she did better than you, Greg.

Might I add a snarky comment to #3? As it turns out, EVERYTHING is from God.

I am suppose to be studying for the bar exam--but your blog is much much much more fun!!!!!!

So I hope you still have a little something back there and it hasn't all frozen off yet!!!
Poor Nas!

I have a few more things to say --but who the heck knows NSA members may be reading this too--so I will limit my comments! But if they are -I just have one thing to say-- BOB YOU ROCK!!!
Erica was comming in on your Rockin but I think with that last feast letter you are back in the lead!

On that note:
I think you need to put a poll up on your site asking?
"Who is the Rockinest NSA member?"
Bob, Erica, or Kenneth? or even Billy? I don't know --yet people who take money have never been as rockin as Billy--yahoo to The New world order--we even like accountants here! The friendly neighborhood tax collector even get love here!

Anyway I digress (SP?) I have to go study more Texas Trusts and oil rights!

You can't leave Juana off that list, she bought me ice cream, indebting me to her forever. Though Billy does make a darn good smoothie.....

First, much props to you for learning to drive in the snow. Whether robots or icecapades, it should be obvious by now that I'll never grow out of my love for controlling machines or respect for others who do it well.

Second, SUVs aren't the only vehicles good in snow. Most anything from a country north of the arctic circle (read: Scandinavia) can hold its own. Front wheel drive Saabs are excellent for all but the steepest hills, and 4WD Subarus can tackle winter roads with aplomb. Have you ever seen an ice rally? They can do almost anything with stud tires (imagine little metal cleats for your car's shoes). It still requires copious amounts of skill, however, to drive like they do around hairpins in a fluid ballet, whipping the car through graceful 180 degree arcs.

perhaps the lack of SUVs (or the lower incidence of them -- 'cause up in the suburbs there's a whole lotta mommies driving 'em and down in the city there's a whole lotta daddies driving 'em) is due to the following...

those of us who grew up in the snowy part of the country pride ourselves on:

a) never letting weather keep us from enjoying life even if it means taking half an hour to get to the baker's square down the block.

b)being able to drive anything through a snowstorm, an SUV, something big like a Lincoln (or a Caddy with rims here in Chicago), a Toyota, a bike, our own two legs. especially if it gets us to said baker's square down the street.

I hear ya on the snow thing. Last year, I was still in the "yeah! Snow is cool and pretty!" mode, since I come from the west coast, where there isn't that much snow in the rural areas. This year, I was a little more like, "Snow is lame. I want it to go away." It is still pretty. For a second. Then I'm over it.

See you at NEBY!!!!

Another Texas transplanted to the upper midwest here... actually more upper than you Chicagoans (I'm in Saint Paul (not Minneapolis!)). But it sounds like you've had more snow than we have had in the Twin Cities. Yesterday we finally had a real snowfall of more than .5 inch. Even the locals have been annoyed for the past couple of months at the lack of snow. Got 6-8 inches of gorgeous powder yesterday on top of maybe 2 inches accumulated ice and snow. Unfortunately haven't had a chance to play in it yet. Discovered that even my lame 2 wheel drive SUV (Explorer) is good for something: at least the clearance makes it easier to get out of the parking lot when the snow plow has piled well over a foot of snow behind you! Just don't try to turn while backing up. Won't go anywhere that way. Hopefully we'll get out and play in it tomorrow.

(Oh, and for those of you who don't know me, I'm a Baha'i programmer from Austin who been friends with Nas and her sister Artemis for several years now and recently moved to Minnesota with my wife who is now in grad school here. One or two of you may have seen me on Jay Braden's blog too).
