forsythia

i was walking into work this morning and started smelling something really fragrant. when i snapped myself out of my thoughts, i realized that i was surrounded by tons of gorgeous forsythia. they always remind me of viriginia, english class in 7th grade, and cynthia. god, it's really a crime to be so absorbed in yourself that you don't even notice the beautiful world blooming around you, and in the blink of an eye, spring will be gone.

a string of events

today we had a strange series of events that led to half of northwestern being evacuated for a couple hours.

it started with our new japanese postdoc dropping and breaking open a bottle of one of the world's stinkiest chemicals. the smell leaked into the office and started to go down the hall, so we weren't surprised when the guys from downstairs ran up claiming that they were smelling stuff in their lab. turns out what they were smelling was not the chemical in our lab, but was instead coming from a gas leak several buildings away. so because of the gas leak, the firemen quickly evacuated all the surrounding buildings. since it was about lunchtime, a lot of NU students filed over to the student union to eat. but at some point during all this mess, a grounds worker cut off a tree limb that fell onto electricity lines which cut power from the surrounding stoplights and several of the campus buildings, including the student union. so now everyone is milling about with no where to go, traffic is backed up and there are fire trucks everywhere. and finally, just to add to the madness, because everyone was evacuated so quickly, a student in the science building next door left their reaction unattended and it started a fire in their hood.

thankfully, everything is under control now. the lab still stinks and probably will until tomorrow, but that's life in the chemistry lab. i feel so bad for the japanese postdoc though. i don't think he realized that the massive evacuation was not due to the 5 milliliters of stuff he spilled, and but instead because of this strange series of coincidental events.

it's like a dream come true

for those of you who have lived with me, you know that my happiest state around the house is when i'm not wearing pants - they're just so constricting. in college, my roommates and i would all announce "no pants" whenever one of us might happen to take our pants off, which for me was quite often.
and now, everyone can participate with me.

friday, may 5, 2006 is NO PANTS DAY. celebrate - leave your pants at home and be free!!!.

i ain't 'fraid of no pants.

take the lead

man, i just can't get enough of cheeseball dance movies. last nite i went to see the latest in the quality genre, take the lead.

as always, it was soooo bad, but soooo good.

i group it in with the movies i that i'm ashamed to love along with brittney spears' "crossroads" (which i saw in the theatre and on video...wait, no one but the parties involved is supposed to know that).

unemployed

i'm starting to get quite stressed about not having a job for when i leave here. none of my museum jobs have come through for me. i think i was pretty naive thinking that i would be able to get whatever my dream job was. because if i felt i was that perfect for a job, everyone else would see that too and want to hire me. but that little thing called "experience" keeps getting in my way. no one seems to want me...it's depressing. i've been in school now for about 20 years trying to make myself a better and better person, and all these people want is someone who has not spent their time in school becoming more educated, but instead someone with that damned experience.
i've broken down and switched to my backup plan of applying for teaching positions at community colleges and prepatory high schools. but guess what? they all want experience too!
tell me please...how am i supposed to get this experience if no one will hire me? sure, i could work for free, but what am i supposed to do about rent and health insurance? i keep joking that working at crate & barrel is always an option, but i'm afraid that it will soon be my only option.
