in the words of shania twain, "man! i feel like a woman!"

so long girl-dom,
helllllloooo woman-hood.

i wore my first pair of woman shoes this weekend. pointy! i used to think this made people look like the wicked witch of the west, but i slowly came around to the fact that, to be woman, you must wear these shoes. so i did. let me tell you, wheee dogs, did i feel different. and wheeee dogs, did everyone treat me differently. they knew i was woman. that's right.

okay, so things weren't that different, and i probably would have preferred my mary janes. but one must sacrifice to become woman.

but today, i'm back to the pink pumas. woman-hood is fleeting and lasts for but an instant.

not to gross anyone out...

but a large topic of discussion in my apartment recently has focused on wiping.
no not windshield wiping, but wiping. you know what i mean.

previous discussions on wiping only went so far as the debate on crumpled vs. folded toilet paper, but these new talks have gone so far as to involve demonstrations and power point presentations (okay, so maybe not the latter).
it was sparked by my recent acquisition of the factoid that women should wipe in a front to back motion to prevent fecal matter from entering the urinary tract and causing infection. after much discussion, andrea and i have decided that this method of wiping, though better, is definately more awkward, for a variety of reasons that do not need to be broadcasted on the internet. it's going to take some work and getting used to, but i think we've decided to try and change our ways.

i learned a lot from these talks. my newfound knowledge includes...1) men have NO CLUE what women do in the bathroom. there were looks of amazement and shock when we described and demonstrated our wiping techniques, and 2) andrea and i wipe from different ends. can you believe we've lived together for 3 years and didn't know??!?!?

now that i have sufficiently given you more information that you will ever want to know, i'll sign out.

on the menu

for dinner last nite:
1 small scoop of jewel-osco seafood salad, consumed in store
1/2 slice of peppered turkey to remove the taste of the seafood salad
3-4 small spoons of ben and jerry's peanut butter cup ice cream
1 spongebob squarepants pop tart with blue icing, bought on impulse while standing in line at the jewel

1 additional spongebob squarepants pop tart
and for dessert...a quarter of a can of vegetarian baked beans

toilet talk

these past few days i've been so sore from running that i find the mere act of lowering myself down onto the toilet to pee is too much to handle.
now i opt for the dropping of pants and falling backwards until i hit the toilet seat.

feeling:

happy:
my first paper got accepted to Inorganic Chemistry today!!! yippee!!! this calls for a celebration and presents for me! i don't know how i will celebrate and i will probably buy the presents myself, but they will be presents, nonetheless. maybe i'll even wrap them.
generous:
i gave blood today. but this isn't really generous, it is necessary. go out and give blood today. others need it more than you do.
sore:
i ran yesterday for reasons i don't understand. i now hurt. EVERYWHERE.

at least i liked it for longer this time

well, it took 4 days this time, but i hate my haircut. i did it again, i chopped it all off. and i thought i liked it. i did. but then the liking stopped and the hating began. we could opt for the old description of helmet head. but then again, maybe we should give me a more masculine name, as i now resemble a BOY!!!! we could also describe it as afro-like...not good if you are not a hip black dude from the seventies. but let's just sum it all up as "meisa, you now look like a boy with an afro wearing a helmet."

why didn't anyone stop me!?!?!?!?!?!?!

google's great

the first 10 prime consecutive numbers in e.com

how cool is google? i know i've talked about this a million times, but i just love them. this was the ad they placed at the tube stop in harvard square advertising for programmers and engineers to join the google team. there was no mention of google in the ad, only what you see above, but if you figure out the answer and go to the website, they ask for your resume. i'm definately working on that this afternoon.
they are just so clever and funny and cute. i love goooooogle!

update: i found what i think is the answer, but the website doesn't seem to be up. let me know if any of you are dorky enough to try to figure it out and actually get a link to a website. juliebutt...i have a feeling you are up to the challenge.

i left my heart in san francisco

freshly back from frisco (the guide book told us not to call it this, so maybe cisco instead?) we had a fantastic trip. it was quite jam-packed with goodness, and has left me very tired. i can't say the city was entirely what i expected; things better and things worse.

for example...i was really astounded by the number of homeless people there. i suppose the weather is the best for being homeless, but it was quite shocking. right after we stepped out of our hotel on the first day, shokufeh nearly got run over by a homeless man with no legs on a skateboard. if you've never seen this, which i can 99.9% guarantee you haven't, it's quite startling. i tried to give away a slice of pizza to someone less fortunate on the streets late at nite when i found that i could barely even approach them, they were so drugged up. this pizza experience kind of opened my eyes to the drug ring around our hotel, complete with a pimp and prostitutes. interesting...

a more pleasant aspect of the trip was the day trip to napa and muir woods. did a little wine tasting at a few vineyards in the valley. man, those people there are in a different world. it's amazing how much they know about a grape product! and how much they spend too! we watched people walk away with cases of wine and not even bat an eyelash at the many figured cost of it all.
on the way back from napa, we stopped off at muir woods, a thousand year old redwood forest. not the oldest of old, but enough to give me a taste of the magnificence of these trees. they really were spectacular. no one should die without seeing these awe inspiring creatures of nature.
all in all a good trip. here's a handful of pics to give you an idea.

bonding with shokufeh. lovely as usual.

trudging our way up one of the many, many, many hills. did i mention there were a lot of hills?

breathtaking redwoods

i love trees!

wow...the pacific

happy anniversary!

today andrea and i turn 3. how did i get so lucky to find such a wonderful roommate? we're celebrating tonite with a nice dinner, a taped episode of scrubs and chocolate fondue. 3 years ago today, i helped her carry her stuff up the 3 flights of stairs to "our" apartment, and started getting to know her. and now here we are having shared so much over the past years...laughter, tears, and, of course, mice.
here's to us andrea! and here's to many more years of a wonderful friendship (hopefully without the mice!)

excited because...

1) i'm heading off to san francisco tomorrow morning! i've never seen the pacific before, so i'm stoked. plus, i haven't seen shokufeh for way too long now, so it will be wonderful to catch up. plans include eating meat with sam while shokufeh eats veggie food with a bunch of girls (haven't discussed with him, but i suspect he will be quite pleased), renting a car and exploring napa valley, reliving my childhood at the esprit outlet, and taking a bike ride through golden gate park. but meisa, you say, you don't know how to ride a bike! if they have them, we're going to try out tandem bikes to see if i can fare any better with someone else to help out.

2) labor day weekend shutdown of all chemistry facilities at NU, thereby making #1 possible. plus this means guilt-free vacay for me.

3) cynthia, my wonderful, fabulous, awesome college roommate just bought a plane ticket to come visit in october. cynthia has long deserved a blog entry dedicated to her. it will be coming soon.

muscle man

strange how personal space is so different in different parts of the world.
today i was riding the elevator with gabriella, khalid and a new korean post doc (like new like just came direct from korea), when the new post doc reaches out his hand, grabs khalid's pec muscles and squeezes, and then calls him a "muscle man".
would you do this to someone you just met?
thank goodness he didn't reach out for the same spot on gabriella or me. at least that definition of personal space carries across borders.
