hair today, gone tomorrow

meisa,
every time you cut your hair, you get mad at yourself. you adamantly swear that you will never go short again, only get trims. you tell all your friends that no matter how much you say you hate your hair, they shouldn't let you cut it.
yet here we are...4 months later, and you are going to do it again. why, meisa, why? it's just going to look bad in the end. why do it? i know, it is very easy to convince yourself that this time will be different. it won't be. you'll see.

next year is here!

woohoo, cubbies won the national league central division this weekend!
i've never really been a sports fan, and i think i only like the cubs because their name is the cubs and baby bears are cute. but maybe there is more to it than that. there is this strange pride i get in feeling american when i am around wrigley field. i suppose having been born in this country, i should have always felt american, but it really only hit me when i walked around wrigley before a game. there's something about the peanuts, the scalpers, and old style that just makes me proud of the USA. does this mean being american is about nuts, beer and illegal doings? oh wait, no...it's the hot dogs too!
a coworker and i have decided to riot along with our fellow cubs fans whether they win or lose to the braves this coming week. current plans involve turning over a car and setting a couch on fire. maybe even more than one! please join us! we will be milling around addison with all the crazies. if you can't find us, i'm sure there will be plenty of others setting furniture ablaze.

google me crazy

so now if you google me, my lagoon pops up as the eighth hit! the "music and entertainment industry student association" (MEISA) still gets the top hits, but i'm up there.
this must mean i'm important. ;)
well, the eighth most important meisa out there anyway.

i said "captain", he said "what?"

today is my uncle's birthday, my uncle being my dad's brother in france.
not only is he one of my favorite people in the world, he must be one of the most interesting people out there. though i have only seen him once every couple of years, throughout my life he has been a true inspiration. he is a molecular biologist and my main scientific influence. i can easily say that if it hadn't been for him, i wouldn't be where i am today. he started me at a young age with gifts of microscopes and telescopes which encouraged my interest in science. funny though, he never gave me a chemistry set.
not only do we share a love of science, but of art, columbo (the detective, not the yogurt), the marx brothers, japanese tourists, and mussels. what more could i ask for?
happy birthday amoo saadi!

mmmmm...bed

how many of you chicagolanders did not spend extra time in bed this morning? that crisp air blowing over you while you cozied up under the covers. nearly every night when my roommate and i go to bed, one of us says to the other "i love bed." this morning we loved bed a little too much. i snoozed for nearly an hour while she got up and showered at a respectable time, then returned to bed for another hour to read. shame on us. but, we still were at work by 8:30. not too shabby.

juliebutt

yesterday i found out my oldest friend julie is coming to visit me.
julie and i have known each other since 5th grade. we still look back and argue over how we met. i maintain that she asked me to be her bathroom buddy (perverse sounding, i know, but there was a sicko at the time raping girls in elementary school bathrooms, and we needed to go with a partner) and the friendship blossomed from there. she has no recollection of this "bathroom buddy" experience.
we spent many a sleepover together, and each family vacation we had, we would bring the other along. i remember probably the worst vacation ever to martha's vineyard when hurricane bob hit. julie bought a t-shirt that said "i survived bob's blow". being 12 or so at the time we didn't really understand the underlying sexual connotations. my parents didn't say anything when she bought it, but who wants to explain that to a 12 year old?
it's been 2 years since we have seen one another, but we still call each other "meisabutt" and "juliebutt" as we did when we first met 13 years ago.
i'll see you soon juliebutt.

mattress for sale?

yesterday, driving along golf rd, i passed the mattress factory store. standing outside the store was a man dressed as a mattress dancing around. and by dancing, i mean he was seriously getting down...running man and all, and there wasn't even music.
does a dancing mattress make you want to buy one?

it's not easy being green

today my reaction turned green. my cousin shokufeh would tell me this is what i deserve for working on a saturday when it is 75 degrees outside with no clouds to be seen. maybe she is right.
i find it to be very counterintuitive that green is such a bad sign in chemistry. oh sure, there are "good" greens, but overall green doesn't bode well. it seems that green is the color of newness and prosperity. why then does my reaction turn green when it goes bad?
maybe this is an omen to move from the bad green occuring in the lab to the beautiful green outside.
