The French. The French are culinary geniuses.
The story goes that the candy was created by a French grandmother for her two grandsons. They responded to her kindness (and delectable treat) with the phrase, "Nous gāte!" or "You're spoiling us!" It was subsequently shortened to "nougat" and became the name of the confection as it spread in popularity. It's a good folk tale. It's more likely, though, that nougat traces back to a Greek walnut confection known as nux gatum.
It's called turron in Spain and torrone in Italy. It's also probably my favorite gelato flavor. :)
wait george, did you already know this or did you just look it up? if you did already know it, while i didn't think it was possible, i am even MORE excited to meet you!
I checked my facts after I wrote the comment, but this was something I remember from years back in high school French class. Leave it to Mrs. Alexander.
Good God Mrs. Alexander. All I remember from her class is, "It's a trick it's a trick!" She would blatantly warn us before we answered a "trick" question. George and I did well in french.
