an electric pencil sharpener?!?
my mother is the most awesome mother in the world. sorry to break the news to you, but she beats out your mom by a million miles.
being the most awesome mother in the world, she sends me packages on a regular basis. usually they include fruit and often some sort of clothing item, and always a very special touch, that only my mother can come up with- like maybe a can of tuna fish or a jar of jelly. to give her a little credit for her strangeness, it's usually that she is trying to fill that last tiny little space in the box and goes looking in our pantry. but today's package i just can't figure out at all...
contents
1 - 4 clementines
2 - some persian ground lemon spice
3 - a black t-shirt
4 - a large used, but now empty, jar
5 - a used electric pencil sharpener, pencil shavings still inside and spilling out all over all the other items
now you can't tell me the jar and pencil sharpener were just to fill the space. am i supposed to fill the jar with the pencil shavings? and then what am i supposed to do with it?
she's the greatest, but she's also verrrrrry strange.

The jar is for the spice. The t-shirt started out white, but with a few stains. She didn't have time to finish covering all the white spots on the shirt, so she included the pencil sharpener so that the shavings could finish the job.

turns out the jar was for the spice - grotesquely large for the amount of spice, but still. and the pencil sharpener was actually the work of my father. she was shocked that he hadn't emptied it. maybe she's not so strange after all.

I can totally imagine the conversation that went on between your parents after your mother discovered that your dad hadn't emptied the sharpener. I also imagine your mother saying "verrrrry strange."
