voyage of the mimi

da da da dah dah dah daaaah; da da da dah dah da daaaaah; da da da dah dah da daaaaah; dadadada daaaaaaaah

anyone recognize the tune? okay, maybe not but certainly you must remember captain granville? okay, maybe not him, but the time when he got hypothermia and the crew had to strip him down and lay naked with him? ahhh, now i see i've sparked a memory...the voyage of the mimi!!!!

i've long meant to blog about the voyage of the mimi. for those of you not lucky enough to share in this documentary series, you are missing out big time. it spanned the nation and has brought together many 20-some year olds who have nothing in common, except they remember the theme music from voyage of the mimi and, of course, the homoerotic hypothermia scene.

so many quality movies and filmstrips shown across america in science classes. even better were the movies we watched in sex ed. i never knew what the boys got to watch, but i most definately saw "julie's story" - the coming of age tale of a young girl trying out for a play when she realizes that she has "become a woman". i wonder what movies they are showing now and if "julie's story" and the "voyage of the mimi" have stood the test of time.

Comments

never have i felt so compelled to comment. i guess since we went to the same junior high i, too, have the hypothermia scene and the entire "julie's story" video burned in my memory. and as far as current schools go, all the 8th grade girls at my school are getting for sex ed is me for an hour a week. 'miss kate unplugged' as i like to think of it. maybe i should try to get my hands on julie's story...

news flash: recently learned that a young ben affleck starred in voyage of the mimi. i guess all the great ones get their start there.

yes! he was 8! :) i had heard that... and it was far worse being named julie while watching julie's story! it was horrific!

Interesting to find someone blogging about The Voyage of the Mimi. I sailed on the Mimi for two years working as first Mate for Peter Marston (a.k.a. Capt. Granville)from 1995 to 1997. We traveled from Gloucester to Miami doing MIMIfests at various ports along the way (Philadelphia, Baltimore, Beaufort, N.C., Norfolk, Va. Cape Canaveral, etc.)I talked to aprox. 35,000 kids each year about the voyages and life aboard the MIMI. These fests were done in conjunction with various educational institutions such as; the Maryland Science Center, The Independent Seaport MUseum of Philadelphia, the University of Florida Sea Grant Program, The University of Miami, the University of Georgia at Skidaway Island, etc.
