unlike yogurt, i'm not so cultured

so years back, my parents and i went to see puccini's la boheme. it was everything an opera should be...sad, beautiful, amazing music. i loved it. i remember seeing my mother get increasingly sleepy as the night went on, and just didn't understand how she could be falling asleep with the fantastic performance on stage. but she did, and now i have become my mother.

i decided in the summer that i wanted to get season tickets to the lyric opera this year. i was convinced that i loved opera, all because of this one la boheme experience. nevermind that i had seen a few others and didn't particularly care for them. i was sure that i'd love it.

along comes the first opera...don giovanni. i made it through the first act, and slept through the second. next, das rheingold...i slept intermittently throughout. i couldn't make it to aida, so i slept at home instead. the last one i went to, a cunning little vixen, i made it the whole way without falling asleep...yay!! but mostly because it was only a little over an hour long.

so when i called my mom last nite, she asked if i had any weekend plans. i mentioned that i would be going to the opera tonite, and she said "oh, you're going to take a nap". yes, mother, yes...a very expensive nap.

There's something cozy about the seats, usually. Who wouldn't sleep?

actually this time i made it through all the way without sleeping! it was a modern opera and in english, so maybe that was the difference. it was pretty good!

I'm totally the same way! I hate it. I feel like I can never pay to sit anywhere.
