i'm sure not ALL mormons are weird

but the family living a few houses down from my parents is.
our two families have not been on the best of terms. well, we've said the friendly hello to one another, but their children and i don't even get that far. some could say that it traces back to me announcing out loud to our science class in high school that he was stupid. but i maintain that this isn't the reason we don't speak.
so while we exchange baked goods/cards/small gifts with some of our neighbors, neither of our families have participated in this with one another. that is, until a few nites ago. my father told me that he was upstairs at 9 at nite, while my mother was watching tv and they hear a knock at the door. he goes downstairs and sees a large group of people at our door. turns out it was the entire family of estranged neighbors - the parents, all three kids, and yes, even the grandmother. they smiled, handed over a bag of rice and spices and said happy new year.
nice. but weird.
