more talk of skirts
this has deserved a blog entry for quite awhile; i don't know why i haven't done it before.
the topic: short ruffly skirts
my stance: burn them all
elaboration: let us all think back to the 1980s. yes, i know it makes you shudder, but stay with me here. now, not all of the eighties were bad. there was madonna after all (yeah, baby, concert in 10 days!!!), and some fantastic music in general (who doesn't love a little karma chameleon?), but the clothes. oh the clothes. and the hairstyles. i longed to have my hair in a side ponytail, but just knew i wasn't cool enough to pull it off. what was i thinking?!?!?!?!?! it's a clothing era that i think we are all more than willing to forget, boys included...you did wear JAMS after all. anyway, to the point. some sicko in the fashion industry recently took a look back and decided that no, the eighties really did have cool clothes, and reintroduced the short ruffle skirt. so now millions of teeny bopper girls and older women (don't even get me started on them) are wearing these monstrosities. they make everyone look like sluts and, to put it nicely, they aren't terribly slimming...for anyone. if you wear these, i'm sorry, but don't. if you like these, i'm sorry, but you're a moron.
Comments
I have to object here!
these are great skirts and there is no reason why older women can't wear them either. LONG live the ruffle skirt.

You really dislike them that much? I actually saw the cutest little high school girl on the train yesterday who was wearing one, and I thought she was adorable in it.
The thing is, the new ruffle skirts are in casual, summery fabrics, so girls can wear them in a sporty way. What was so wrong with the 80s ruffle skirts is that women wore them with white pumps and metallic lamé tops. THAT is yucky.

i don't know mojan, you don't have me sold. i think they're just ugly hanging on the rack, so it really doesn't matter what they are paired with.

whatever designers are trying to bring back the 80s should be banished from the fashion industry. and the ruffle skirt is not the only hideous style that is being brought back... oh, how i wish i could burn every picture taken of me from that era! (did you ever wear two pairs of different-colored socks at the same time?)

They are quite popular here along with irregular, very irregular, hemlines. Some are cute but many are quite slutty-looking but then, that's de rigueur here.

I agree with Meisa. They should be banished along with asymmetrical tshirt skirts. My problem with the ruffle skirt lies with its length. Namely, that they are WAY too short. A little gust of wind or a car that swooshes by too fast and ladies, it's all over. I agree with the sporty point, but overall I think they are terrible.
