Marriage is Wonderful and How Michael Frey Saved Our Honeymoon
August 15, 2005

On the water

Hello blogosphere, I'm a married lady! A week and a half after the magic happened, Myk and I are still processing everything. We were just so amazed, touched, and humbled by the outpouring of love from our friends and families. Down to the tiniest details, these people created the most magical event for us. I seriously don't even think that "thank you" scratches the surface on this one...

So after gettin' hitched, we had a lovely week. We flew to Miami the day after the wedding, spent the night in South Beach, got on a boat the next day and were on the ocean until Friday morning. We then flew back to Chi-town and hid for the rest of the weekend, addressing important issues such as the festively-wrapped boxes everywhere and also cleaning our home from top to bottom. It feels good to have the place mostly in order now...it's like we can start this new chapter of life in clean and organized surroundings.

I'm sure you guys want to know all the exciting things so I'll tell you the story about how we forgot possibly the most important items when traveling abroad. Sure, we had our luggage, but we managed to forget our PASSPORT AND BIRTH CERTIFICATE. If you expect to leave the mainland, you must have either of these documents (and as of December, you *have* to have a passport).

Friends, it's hard to pack for your wedding/honeymoon, especially when you leave your apartment as a single person and know that the next time you return will be after your honeymoon is over. My brain was so full of gettin' married that I completely forgot that we needed this important documentation to leave the country. And even though that was incredibly stupid, I'd say that I almost don't blame myself...there was just too much to think about. "Overwhelming" is a word I would definitely associate with August 6. Overwhelming in a good way, of course.

I realized that we forgot this stuff when we were in the car on the way to the airport the day after the wedding. Crap! My friends Sania, Tahirih, Erica and her son Tristain were staying at my place, so while we were in the air they were digging through drawers and boxes and miraculously, they found everything. As a cute souvenir, they took a picture of themselves with our documents and left it for us on our bed when we got home. Nice.

Now part 2: GETTING IT TO US IN LESS THAN 24 HOURS. Did you know that on Sunday FedEx does not deliver? What tha? This is America! Of course, Myk and I had no idea that that was true, we just thought it would be overnighted to us and we'd just get it in the morning, it might set us back a few bucks and who cares, we're in honeymoon la-la land. And we did wake up the next day to find out that it arrived at 2:30am. We had no idea how it happened, we just breathed a sigh of relief and had a nice time.

What we did not know, though, was that this was way more complicated. I'm actually glad we didn't find out about this until we got home. Anyways, our favorite postal specialist/physicist friend Michael Frey knew just what to do: he looked into buying a plane ticket so that he could fly it down himself, of course. (!!!) Unfortunately, that was not going to work out, but he did HIRE A COURIER to bring our documents to us. Let me say that again: he hired a PERSON to fly to Miami to bring us an ENVELOPE. If that does not scream friendship, I'm not really sure what does.

So Michael Frey, friend extraordinaire, saved our honeymoon. Three (hundred million) cheers for that guy.

While there is much more to say, I'll have to save it lest this entry turn into a novel. We were SO HAPPY to see so many of our friends at our wedding, many of whom came from great distances (Ezra, Shokufeh and Sam, Stephanie, Kristoffe....). I really just wanted to let you guys know that we are absurdly happy and getting back to our everyday lives now. Let me recommend marriage, it feels safe, warm, and loving, and Baha'u'llah says that marriage is "a fortress for well being." Can't go wrong with that! Myk and I are so happy to be together, so thank you to everyone who helped with our wedding, reception, and honeymoon...you really mean the world to us. :)

It was good for me too. I love to travel. The HOW is one of my favorite places ever. Getting to see one of favorite people get hitched to a great guy? Definitely a tempting trip not to pass up.

Oh... and getting to see old face-to-face friends. Also, I got to meet net friends face-to-face.

Yeah. Unavoidable.

Haha you should have seen the looks on me and Tahirih's face when the FexEx guy told us they don't deliver on Sundays...we almost fell over. (I was the chauffer on the adventure, in case you hadn't heard, haha)

I'm so glad things worked out well, and that your honeymoon was fun. :-)

Sholeh, I did not know that! Thank you for helping out in the crazy process. :) I keep finding out that misc. people were involved in stuff...I'm really touched by all this participation.

It was my pleasure. :-)

The clouds in that picture look like they were dabbed on with a paint brush...

oh, and congratulations!

Lacey,

I'm so sorry that it's taken me this long to congradulate you and Myk. I feel like a first-class cad.

But, better late than never. Beth sends her best wishes as well. May you be each others' best companion through all the worlds of God.

When my ex-husband and I left Chicago for our 10-day honeymoon in Italy, we *thought* we left our apartment keys with our friend so she could housesit. Turns out, we left her keys to... some other apartment? Who knows. But they didn't open our door. She sorted everything out with the landlord and got a spare set of keys, thank goodness. But it just goes to show you that weddings are like temporary frontal lobotomies for brides and grooms... the more important it is, the more likely you are to forget it.

Here's to heroic friends :)
