I feel that there are some songs that really deserve [positive] commentary. After listening to them oh, a few dozen times or so I usually just get sick of it and never want to hear it again (The Flaming Lips' "Yoshimi" album is kind of like this, unfortunately) but sometimes, there are actual songs that really just cut a little hole in me and settle right in, never getting old no matter how many times I play them.

One song that comes to mind is U2's "With or Without You," where Bono just belts out this soul-wrenching "oooooooooohhh" at the end (you know what I'm talking about) and sounds like he is really hurting. Of course, I have no idea if he's really still hurting or not because I'm sure he's sung the song 500,000 times, but there is a potency to that song that makes me just clench my chest and wish I could put my hand on his back, give him a knowing glance, purse my lips and nod my head in the most cliche way I know how. I also think about that song in the context of the movie Reality Bites (which I know some would argue as the "worst movie ever," but I beg to differ...The Rundown is much, much worse) is probably the best use of both the song and the best portrayal of the angst of Generation X. But I digress.

The other song is "Crystal Village" by Pete Yorn. While no, my musical tastes are not creative nor diverse, I truly believe this guy is something special. He, like Bono, does this soul-scraping (but somehow, less tortured-sounding) "ooooooh" thing that just makes me, again, want to go pat him on the back and be like, "Pete, you know man, better times are just around the bend!" Go listen to this song if you have no idea what I'm talking about and you tell me if I am wrong.

End musical commentary of the day. Happy weekend everyone!

yep. i could watch reality bites several days in a row. i hate to admit it. i mean, it's not quite at the level gremlins and weird science were the summer i was seven. back then, my best friend and i consumed each movie every, single, solitary day. but, every so often i get a hankering for reality bites and i can be satisfied, two, three days in a row. seriously.

wow... who the crap says Reality Bites is the worst movie ever? Do they have no comedic sense whatsoever? Ok, but maybe I'm biased because I can watch it endlessly and be happy, quote it at will, and laugh about it like the dork I am. And oh man is that song well placed at the end of that movie.
I also think of that song in the context of the famous Friends episode where Ross and Rachel are breaking up.
Good musical commentary Lace. I, personaly, could make an entire long list of songs in that same category (having the quality of settling straight into your soul). I should do so one day, passing good music vibes into the world is always a good deed in need.

Right on, "Abs". I don't know who you are, but I totally agree. I actually think of the use in "Friends" before "Reality Bites" but I liked both uses a lot. It is a great song.
