Waste Not, Want Not
My grandparents (mom's side) have this magnet on their refrigerator that has been there as long as I can remember that says "Waste Not, Want Not!" on a yellow background with this funny little running man next to the words. It took me ages to figure out what it meant, and even now I find myself only understanding it when the circumstances are just right. So lately I have been noticing how much freakin' trash I produce. I'm not talking art, folks, I'm talking plastic bags, cardboard boxes, paper everything, bottles and cans, styrofoam cups, Peet's cups with plastic lids twice a week (at least) with the little java jacket...and all of this is totally ridiculous. I do recycle but I can't do that with those microwavey lunchy things with all their packaging (for like 3 bites of food, at that) or Peet's cups. For about a week now I've been making efforts at being drastically less wasteful. I'm making coffee at home in the plastic on-the-go cup and I'm planning on buying a Nalgene to curb my water bottle habit. I'm using tupperware instead of ziploc. I'm not buying packagey frozen food. I'm thinking about buying in bulk instead of buying the usual 2 boxes of Kashi a week. I do believe this is going to work out, and I love a good challenge. Besides that it's always good to do things that help one to respect oneself. I'll let ya know how it goes. Posted by Lacey at April 01, 2003 12:09 PMComments
I applaud your efforts. I know it wasn't really the focus of your post, but what kind of Kashi do you eat? I'm all about the GoLean Kashi. Love the stuff, and it fills me up like no other cereal. I am eating some right now. Posted by: shokufeh on April 1, 2003 12:18 PMMm..I've been mixing Good Friends with Go Lean Crunch. Gotta love the crunchies. I go through that stuff though...buying in bulk is a pretty good idea, I think. Posted by: lacey on April 1, 2003 01:14 PMHey Lacey. I was just wondering if you and Sania still wanted to get together in a couple of weeks. Posted by: Elizabeth on April 1, 2003 01:58 PMgood post, lacey! it's amazing how much trash piles up & the ways we can easily let things slip by...the coffee cup is a good 1st step. i'm currently beating myself up over the crazy amount of plastic bags we've amassed in the cabinet under the sink. i have a note on our wipeboard to bring back bags next time i go to jewel/osco or anywhere that takes these - it's out of hand! also, how 'bout one of those canvas bags for small grocery trips? check out this link - good stuff: http://www.nalgene-outdoor.com/technical/plastics/reduction.html Posted by: miss ellen on April 1, 2003 03:11 PMGreat link, Ellen! I feel a little more educated now about plastics. Those grocery bags occupy a similar space under our kitchen sink--they get everywhere. But they are recyclable, so that's good. And the canvas bag is not a bad idea at all, especially because they are so sturdy as well. Posted by: lacey on April 1, 2003 03:44 PMPeople's market up in Evanston donates the amount of a plastic bag to a cause of your choice when you DON'T use one of their plastic or paper bags. I found that out a week or so ago when I was there, quite cool. I also usually get paper instead of plastic at the grocery store and reuse them or bring them with the next time. Also, if I have my bag on me (the bigger of the two Timbuk2 bags I have), I just use that if I have space instead of using bags. Good choices indeed. Also Nalgene rocks hard. Posted by: naz on April 1, 2003 04:51 PMrock on! Cashiers have always looked at me funny when I respond to "Paper or plastic?" with "No, thanks!" Oh, well. I really do like places like Sam's which refrain from bags period. However, everything comes in packaging. Don't think my dad's solution of burning all cardboard is really helpful. Posted by: ez on April 1, 2003 08:00 PMAwesome, Lacey! I'm always impressed when people can step outside this culture of consumerism enough to be shocked by the way we live. A big Hi-5 to you!
