It's all relative

Remember when $2.00/gallon seemed like an expensive price for gas? Oh, the good old days... of a few years ago.
Now, we'd be happy to pay $3.00/gallon.

people in the us are still comparably well off -- have you compared our fuel prices here in germany/europe? it's a mess, a single mess.
