What I like about Borders:
- their wide selection of books, magazines, various and sundry
- their big covered lanai
- their appreciation of and contributions to the community
What I don't like about Borders:
- their nasty bathrooms
i still hate the word lanai. i don't understand how it doesn't invoke images of the golden girls for you, and you continue to use it. how about porch? or patio? i also think about an outside patio with a linoleum (sp?) floor. this is not attractive. neither are the golden girls.
Posted by: meisa at January 27, 2004 05:02 AMeverytime i go to borders in atlanta (the downtown store), I always run into someone i know, whether it be from work or a bahai... If I get tired of hanging in the elevator, I just go to borders... It's either that or getting some FRESH AIR... just kidding....
Posted by: roya at January 27, 2004 05:52 AMI didn't even know what lanai meant until just now. Thank you, Meisa! :)
I agree with the bathroom thing. B&N is the same way! Each and every corporate bookstore I go into has completely uncharming and downright gross bathrooms. You'd think with all that money they're pulling in they could invest in some nicer facilities. Sheesh.
Posted by: lacey at January 27, 2004 08:15 AMi too was confused by the term lanai. somehow and image of a plant came into my mind. and i imagined this huge plant like structure forming a canopy over borders... isn't lanai also one of the hawaiian islands?
Posted by: kari at January 27, 2004 11:51 AMVery good, Kari! They're spelled the same, if you don't put in any diacritical marks, and they're pronounced the same if you don't pronounce the island in the proper Hawaiian way - Lana'i.
The lanai at Borders does not have linoleum. You should come see it for yourself, and use the word while you're here. :)
never will i speak that word! it has been used by blanche, soffia, dorothy, and rose way too much. do you really want to be in the same category as them?
Posted by: meisa at January 28, 2004 05:35 AMthanks shok. i wish i could say that i have extensive knowledge of the geography of the south pacific, but, alas, i just know that one random fact.
Posted by: kari at January 28, 2004 09:29 AMIf y'all want to see some gross bathrooms come to New Orleans and visit UNO's Liberal Arts builiding or the Business building (very creative names, dont you think?). At one point a student made a sign for the business building bathroom that read " Do not enter. this is a cess pool."
and lanai also reminds me of the golden girls. their use of the word always annoyed me, but I still have fond memories of them. There's just something about rich, old, crazy ladies that amuses me.
Posted by: Emily at January 28, 2004 08:41 PMmaybe rich, old, crazy ladies, but not ones that talk about sex as much as they do. gives me the heebie jeebies
